From the year 1940 onwards, when the avenues of employment increased especially in defence and allied fields, more and more young men attracted to Pune and nearby areas and in the year 1953 a Congregation of the Marthomites was formed by the late Rev.T.M.Mathai. With the Pimpri-Chinchwad industrial area coming into existence, the number of Mar Thoma Christians increased and St.Johns Mar Thoma Parish Kirkee was formed in February,1967. Later a separate worship service for St.Peter’s Mar Thoma Parish was started at St.Mary’s Church, Pune. A separate Chapel was constructed at Dehu Road in 1970 and a separate Parish was established there in 1979. St.Thomas Mar Thoma Church, Pimpri was consecrated in the year 1979.
Members of St.Johns Mar Thoma Parish, Kirkee and St. Peters Mar Thoma Parish, Pune residing in and around Vishrantwadi who used to meet in cottage prayers felt the need for a permanent place of worship. This desire took concrete shape with the meeting held in Feb,1988. On 16th Feb, 1989, Most Rev. Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom Valiya Metropolitan, the then Bishop of our Diocese accorded recognition to this group and with the help of the pioneers, we were able to start the worship in the CNI Church at Mohanwadi. Dighi Yerwada Mar Thoma Congregation formed vide Kalpana dated 19.03.1992 of Rt.Rev.Geevarghese Mar Athanasius, Diocesan Bishop and first Holy Communion was celebrated by Rev.T.J.Abraham. Parish formed through the Kalpana dated 01.11.1992 of Rt. Rev. Geevarghese Mar Athanasius. Achens from Pune celebrated Holy Communion services. Later our Lord helped us to come together and worship in our own church. The Immanuel Mar Thoma Church was consecrated on 30th March, 1996 by Rt. Rev Dr.Issac Mar Philoxenos Episcopa. During the period Rev. T.J.Abraham, Rev. C. Thomas and Rev Koshy Mathew served the Parish. For a short period Rev. Oommen George (now Rt. Rev. Dr. Thomas Mar Theethos Episcopa) was our resident Vicar. The parsonage was dedicated on 15th November 1998 by Rt.Rev.Dr. Issac Mar Philoxenos Episcopa, and Rev. Varghese Mathew stayed at the parsonage. Rev Bobby Philip, Rev Minoy N Kuruvilla, Rev Geevarghese Kochummen, Rev. Abraham Varghese and Rev.Raju George Ancherry were also served this Parish. At present Rev.Saji Thomas is serving as the Vicar. By the grace of God Almighty we could complete the renovation of our Church in the year 2018. The Church was re-dedicated by Diocesan Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Theodosius Episcopa on 20th July, 2018.
Immanuel Mar Thoma English Medium school : It was the vision of our former Vicar Rev. C. Thomas and the members of the Parish to have a School through which we could contribute to the local community. With this thought in mind, a Nursery School was started in 1994 with a handful of children. Initially classes were conducted at the residences of Mr. P V John and Mr. Jacob Varghese and many of our members and neighbours helped in teaching the students. As a result of increasing number of students, classes were then shifted to the Church building and a new teacher was appointed. The School steadily grew and new classes were added every year. In 1997, we formally began the Primary section with Standard I. Permission to start Primary section with Standard I was obtained by Rev. C Thomas and late Mrs. Mariamma Thomas. From time to time permission was taken from concerned authorities to run all the classes from Standard I to Standard X. At present we have more than 1500 students studying in our school. It is indeed the grace of Almighty that we could achieve 100% results in the SSC Board exams throughout since beginning.
Immanuel Mar Thoma Church and Immanuel Mar Thoma School are under Dighi Yerwada Marthoma Centre which is registered under the Charitable Trust.
